Librettos

Operatic and theatrical collaborations by Susana Amundaraín

Susana Amundaraín is a Venezuelan–American visual artist and writer whose work spans painting, collage, installation, and text. Her long-standing collaboration with composer Efraín Amaya has produced a series of operatic and theatrical projects in which image and word grow together: librettos shaped by painterly imagination, and staged worlds animated by color, light, and gesture.

Her librettos for works such as Clepsydra, Phantasmagorilla? No! Phantasmagoria, Lilian & Leo, and Constellations explore memory, time, and transformation, often drawing on visual metaphors first developed in her studio practice. These projects have been premiered in the United States and abroad, in venues ranging from contemporary-music festivals and opera companies to experimental theatre spaces.
