Leopoldo (Polo) Martí

 

 

 


Leopoldo "Polo" Martí is an Argentinian composer, classical guitar player, educator, and researcher. He is a faculty member at the Nacional de Música (UNL). He obtained his Master of Music degree in the UNCuyo University, with a concentration on Latin American Music of the Twentieth Century. Among his teachers are Walter Heinze, Miguel Martínez, Aníbal Sampayo, Miguel Girollet, Abel Carlevaro, and several specialists in the fields of Argentinian, Latin American, contemporary, and world music. He has researched in the area of folk-rooted music, doing field works and working with a number of renowned Latin American and Argentinian musicians like Aníbal Sampayo, Ramón Ayala, Remo Pignoni, Ariel Petrocelli, Alfredo Zitarrosa, Raúl Carnota, Jorge Marziali, Juan Falú, and others.

His compositions highlight the folkloric roots through various compositional techniques. He has recorded with Grupo "Maíz", "Dúo Plana-Martí", Ensamble "La Chimera", Aníbal Sampayo, Ramón Ayala, and well known Latin American musicians. His compositions include instrumental music, concertos, and choral symphonic works ("Canto a Guayasamín", "Los Cantos del Viento", "Concierto para Flauta y Cuerdas", "Concierto Andino para Quena y Cuerdas", "Cantata en Unión y Libertad", "Ríos Profundos", others.) Some of his arrangements and orchestrations are: "Misa Criolla Sinfónica", "Markama Sinfónico", "Cuyanazo Filarmónico", "Concierto Criollo" (Homenaje a Atahualpa Yupanqui), Susana Baca, Pedro Aznar, Ricardo Mollo, Jaime Torres, Elena Roger, Lisandro Aristimuño. He and Dúo Plana-Martí created the label "Ediciones Del Urú", having published numerous CDs, among which there are "Frutos" in 2015, with his own instrumental pieces and songs, and in 2019 "De la raíz al fruto", also with his compositions based on the concept of the "imaginary folklore". He is currently Associate Professor of Musical Acoustics, Instrumental guitar, and Popular Music, in the Department of Arts and Design, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina.
